We return to the darkened recesses of the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas to begin our coverage of the 56th San Francisco International Film Festival. Rather than make the effort to write a flowery introduction, here's how the San Francisco Film Society puts it -

Were you bewildered or perturbed when immediately following the Academy Awards your friend's Facebook picture went green? Are you a fan of the amazing visual effects (VFX) that are such an integral part of the movie experience these days? Have you ever wondered about the unsung heroes who work long hours creating the digital props and sets that make movie magic work?

Rare do I see I film where the star isn't the best the part of the movie, but the circle of actors surrounding him. I'm sure that's wasn't the intention of the film makers, but that's what happened with "Burt Wonderstone".

This week we will be speaking with independent filmmakers Kasi Brown and Brandon Walter. They recently crowd-funded their own feature film, "Gone Doggy Gone," which goes into production later this month. Our goal is to talk with them about their project and what it is like to write, fund and produce it themselves. Later, if they are both still alive, we plan to have them back after production to tell us how it all went. Bringing you the absolute worst in crowd funded entertainment, guaranteed!

I had the pleasure of attending the presentation of the San Francisco Film Society's Mel Novikoff Award to Roger Ebert in 2010. The thing about Ebert I liked the most was that he loved movies - not "film" - but movies. Here's what I wrote at the time...
