A New Member of the WSOTW Team...
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Wed, 08/03/2011 - 10:23Please welcome the newest member of the Worst Show on the Web Team, Charles Carmichael-Smythe. Chuck's asked to join the team and contribute "cultural" reviews to our website. With regard to film, his approach will be slightly different in that after viewing a current release, he's gonna pair it up with something from Hollywood's Golden Era (or Silver Era, or Bronze, or Plastic, etc. You get the idea.) Were movies really better 50 to 70 years ago? Let's see...

Review - You Kids Get Off My Lawn! Wait... NEVERMIND! ("Chronicle," "Akira" )
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 17:36"I am the apex predator." With those words spoken by teen Andrew (Dane DeHaan), a fight ensues between him and his best friend/cousin Matt (Alex Russell) that climaxes the new release "Chronicle," a film shot entirely on camcorders & alternate videos.

Review - Kids Films... that AIN'T ("Hugo," "Team America World Police")
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Thu, 02/02/2012 - 15:44Up for an astounding 11 Academy Awards, "Hugo" is a rarity: a Martin Scorsese film without bloodshed, dismemberment or a ballet of bullets. Not quite a "family" movie, but darn-near close, this tricky film delivers two separate stories that intermesh in a long-winded, character driven arch that never really adds up to the sum total of its parts. Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield, who bears an uncanny resemblance to David Bennett from 1985's "Legend,") lives hidden away and alone in a Paris railway station circa 1930 after his clockmaker father (Jude Law) dies in a museum fire.

Review - "Shhhhhhhh... I can't hear the movie!" ("The Artist," "The Comic")
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Thu, 01/19/2012 - 16:39When I first heard about "The Artist" (a French-made, silent B&W movie? Really?) my first thought, I must admit, was "gimmick" - like 3D or "Smell-o-Vision." Boy-howdy, was I ever wrong!

Review - ANOTHER Feel Good Film for the Holiday Season ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo")
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Tue, 01/10/2012 - 18:07Based on the books by Swedish author Stieg Larrsen, this is MGM’s entry movie of which there is two more to follow: "The Girl Who Played With Fire," and "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest"

Review - Sick of Holiday Movie Crap? Try these out... ("The Descendants," "Table for Five")
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Mon, 12/19/2011 - 19:03No car crashes, no explosions or runaway robots, no cutsie anamorphic CGI animals, and NOT in 3-D! That's right! A movie for ADULTS!! Touching, gripping, heart-wrenching and funny, this family saga of loss and more loss is set amidst the beautiful lush landscapes of the Hawaiian islands.

Review - Four "Threes..."
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Sun, 10/30/2011 - 15:39My apologies for the lack of postings. I still haven't come down from the Royal's wedding...
The Three Musketeers (2011)
Yeah, I know what you're thinkin'. What? Another one?? With no less than six different versions or variations on the classic Dumas story, this version is quirky, silly, and completely preposterous - and I still managed to like it!

Review - Turn and Cough Please... (Contagion, Outbreak)
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Sat, 09/10/2011 - 09:55Contagion (2011)
That person sitting next to you just coughed. Do they have some horrible, highly contagious virus that could wipe out the entire population of Earth or just a popcorn kernel stuck in their throat? That's the setup for Stephen Soderbergh’s newest film “Contagion.”

Review - Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before... (Troll Hunter)
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Sat, 09/03/2011 - 10:46Troll Hunter (2010)
Yes, I know Harry reviewed this film as part of our coverage of this year's San Francisco International Film Festival, and yes, I know he liked it. I just thought I'd give you all a second chance to consider watching it now that it's out on DVD. So here's my take...
The Norwegians have nothing on us when it comes to making mockumentaries. What would happen if you were to combine “The Blair Witch Project” and “Cloverfield”, but throw in a classic Norwegian fairy tale at the same time?

Review- Girls Kick Ass! ("Hanna" et al...)
Submitted by Show Guest Critic on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 12:27One of the best films of the year so far is getting its DVD release September 6th. I speak of "Hanna," one in a long line of 'kick ass girl' films. Here's a quick review of it, and some others in its vein...
